This Week: Chuck Colson

He was known as President Richard Nixon's 'hatchet man'--a hard-headed player bent on political success. He became the first person jailed in relation to the Watergate scandal of 1974. Today he's the founder of Prison Fellowship - the largest outreach organisation to prisoners and victims of crime in the world - and one of Christianity's most astute intellects. This week hear Charles Colson share about the Richard Nixon years, his role in the Watergate scandal and the experience that turned his life around.

Plus, successful songwriters share their secrets! Kari Jobe, Jason Ingram and Reuben Morgan on writing lyrics that touch the soul.

Second Opinion: Baby or Career?

This week's Second Opinion dilemma comes from Antonia. She's currently working in a full-time role that she sees as her Christian 'calling' - a high-level position in a welfare organisation, where she gets to help improve people's lives. She loves the job and after dreaming about a role like this for years believes God led her into it.

But in the past year, only a few months after she stepped into this new role, Antonia got married. And while her husband never talked much about kids before they tied the knot, suddenly he feels it's time to start a family. Seeing his friends and siblings having children, he really wants his own. He's not forcing the issue, but it's pretty clear that his desire to have kids soon isn't going to go away.

Antonia never wanted kids immediately after getting married, at least not for five years or so - and she doesn't feel she can do both her job and motherhood at the same time. Working part-time might seem like an obvious answer, but her role isn't something that could be easily downscaled. It was advertised as a full-time position, it's the type of job you work towards for years, and it really needs someone dedicated to the task five days a week.

Motherhood, or marketplace. Which should she choose?

• Antonia has thought about trying to negotiate some special arrangement with the boss to work part-time in her role, but in her heart of hearts she feels that if she tried to juggle both the job and being a mum, both would suffer.

• She's also wondering if it's selfish that she wants to continue her job, rather than start a family. Is it wrong that she would rather work for a few more years rather than raise a child?

• And is it wrong if she doesn't agree with her husband that now is the time to start a family? Should Antonia be submitting to her husband's wishes, and if so, how can she change her mindset to be more enthusiastic about the idea of becoming pregnant and leaving the job of her dreams?

Give Antonia your advice below. If you're a woman who has faced this dilemma, we'd particularly love to hear how you made your decision.

Second Opinion: Excluded from My Family

Anita has a grown-up son and daughter-in-law - let's call them Mark and Lydia - and together they have two little kids. Sadly, ever since the first child came along, Anita has been slowly but surely shut out from the family - just when she was ready to be a doting grandma.

Anita used to have a good relationship with both her son and daughter in law, but as soon as the first baby came, something changed. Her gifts were rejected, they started closing her out of family gatherings like birthday celebrations, started giving her the cold shoulder when she dropped around to visit, and cancelling lans to get together. It's now at the point where Anita has had to seek Legal Aid for permission to visit, and has to ring ahead weeks in advance to book in a visit to her own son and grandchildren.

Anita puts the situation down to two things: firstly, because Lydia seems to be calling the shots in the marriage, and secondly, because of cultural differences. Lydia is from an ethnic background and her large extended family seems to be excluding Anita just because she is Anglo-Saxon and not part of their culture. They hold big family gatherings with lots of traditional food and customs, but apparently hut out anyone who doesn't share their background and traditions. Anita once asked Lydia why they don't include her, and she simply said, "It's just tradition".

Anita used to have a really warm and open relationship with her son; now he's cold towards her and hangs up on her if she calls. He is also doing the same thing with his own brother.

What can Anita do? Call your advice in this Sunday evening or leave your thoughts below now.

Have you ever been in a similar situation? What did you do? Anita will be grateful for any ideas you have.

Today, his Potters House church (no relation to the Australian denomination) in Dallas, Texas sees over 30,000 attend its services every week, with thousands more reading his books and watching his TV programs. Critics worry about Jakes' mansions and tailored suits; some even question if he teaches true Christianity.
Some thoughts on the Rudd-Abbott 2010 Make it Count Event

I have just returned from the Australian Christian Lobby's 2010 Make it Count event in Canberra last night, where Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Opposition Leader Tony Abbott addressed Christian leaders in the lead up to the next election. The event was watched by tens of thousands of Christians in churches and other venues across the nation. My thoughts?

a) It is a giant credit to the ACL to pull this event off for a second time. No doubt advisors on both sides would've questioned its value for their respective leaders.

b) There was little in each leader's address to get excited about. Rudd took the opportunity of talking about the ALPs current Education Building projects, support of chaplaincy etc. Abbott focussed much on providing a strong economic future for Australia, through which good works could be done (my words). There were no policy announcements, like Howard's internet filtering software initiative of 2007. It was a little bland, although Abbott was a little more detailed on his values.

c) Rudd was smooth but said nothing about any personal sense of faith. Abbott's speech was littered with biblical references but his statement, 'As a Christian, I believe people are basically good...' would've raised many an eyebrow from this biblically-astute crowd.

d) The questions asked by the Christian leaders - on issues of Indigenous health, immigration, climate change, the definition of marriage and gay civil partnerships, chaplaincy, the sexualisation of children, and prayer in parliament - were very general and brought very general answers from both political leaders. Politically, it may be asking too much to desire more specificity but I longed for sharper questions.

e) I was interested in Abbott making such strong ties to John Howard as his 'mentor' while positioning him as someone who was 'a man of his time' whose values Abbott would take forward in new ways.

f) The event's great value is showing both leaders that there is a voting Christian public keenly watching their moves, rather than Christians gathering any great insights from the leaders themselves. This could be 'tweaked' to provide more of the latter, but is still a valuable service. I hope this event becomes a key event each election time.

I caught up with those Christian leaders who got to ask questions of both Rudd and Abbott afterwards and asked them how they felt about the answers they received. Their feelings were mixed; you'll hear the on Open House this Sunday.

Did you watch the webcast? What were your impressions?

Talkback - Is Australia Racist?

Racism's back in the headlines this week, after two high-profile football identities made race-based comments about indigenous players. First was the NSW State of Origin assistant coach Andrew Johns, sledging a player over the colour of their skin; Apparently he's got a reputation for it; Then in Melbourne on Wednesday, the former AFL coach Mal Brown dropped some appalling quips about Aboriginal players at a charity lunch.

Well it's interesting that just the night before, 5 minutes down the road at Melbourne Town Hall, there was a debate going on over whether Australia is still struggling with its racist past. It was part of the St James Ethics Centre's "Intelligence Squared" series; And we thought it'd be good to hear from speakers on either side of the debate.

First, we spoke to Haneefa Deen. She's an award-winning author, and third-generation Pakistani Australian; She's worked with the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, and is former Deputy Commissioner of the Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs Commission of West Australia;

We also caught up with Dr Tanveer Ahmed; He says Australia has moved on from its racist past; and is a very successful multicultural society. Tanveer's a psychiatrist, and a Sydney Morning Herald columnist who often writes on the issue of racism.

Tell us your views.

Is Australia racist?

How do we compare to other nations?

And are comments about skin colour ok if you're 'just bantering with friends', or is that unacceptable in any context?

Share your stories, experiences, and views.

History-Making-Flight: Update

In April 2010 Sheridan spoke to one very intrepid amateur pilot, Ken Eevers. Ken was preparing to fly around the world in a single engine airplane, with his mate Tim Pryse - to raise awareness and funds in the flight against Malaria. The trip is called Millions Against Malaria; and when they finish, Ken and Tim will have burnt nearly 14,000 Litres of Avgas; and will make the record books as the first people to fly around the world in an all-Australian aircraft. Six weeks into their adventure, Ken joined us again on the phone from Tanzania to give us an update.
