In 1956 five missionaries trekked into the Ecuadorian jungle to reach Auca Indians. The missionaries were killed and the story became legendary through the writings of Elizabeth Eliot and others. But their legacy lives on. Join me this week as we talk to Steve Saint. His father Nate was one of those killed, yet Steve returned to live with the very tribe that took his father’s life. It’s a story of radical forgiveness that you wont want to miss.

I just listened to steve saint, he was just incredible. recently my husband and i have been discussing paul's speech to the athenians, and how relevant paul was in applying the good news to their lives- he starts off with talking about their gods, idols and shrines everywhere and doesnt necessarily laugh at them or curse them for it (which is not to say he commends them either!) but he uses it to get to the shrine he noticed of the 'unknown god' and then proceeds to tell them about this unknown god. we found it fascinating that he didnt try to change the glaring sins straight away- he got to the heart of the matter which was the gospel message itself and when i was listening to steve talking about his life there with the tribe, i thought the same thing. he didnt criticize their actions straight away but told them the good news about God's way first and how He was interested in them and wanted to do away with their vendettas, he didnt go at them with words they wouldnt understand (which are perfectly understandable and appropriate to our culture- like 'salvation' and 'repentance' etc) but used phrases like 'God's trail'- it was a real insight. i guess jesus met us where we were at, so if we are to imitate Him , thats a good place to start. awesome interview sheridan, you're the andrew denton of christian interviewing! (although denton gets a bit dodgy at times- you dont!)thanks!

I had read the original story of Nate Saint in a hard cover book as a new christian in the early 1970s it was to me a very real challenging story The title was "Through the Gates of Splendour" by Nate Saint's sister Rachel Saint, about what took place in the 1950s. It was completed in 1956.The five men were martyred on the river on a sand bank known as Palm Beach. The wives had stood by in prayer and kept in touch by radio,on a daily radio sked. The last transmission was that the Auca indian men a tribal group had made contact after that the morning radio sked was not answered . The army men of the day went and and conducted a very wide search along the river and the aircraft was found stripped and the mens bodies were found all speared and floating in the river, news was sent back to thewomen via radio. Nate saints son was on an interview by HCJB, at a later date. Unfortunately i gave the book away so iam trying to remember what was written on the plaque on or near the site . It was a big brass plaque this is in part only "WE REST IN THEE OUR SHEILD AND OUR DEFENDER." GREG LITFIN
