Open House - July 27

This week we welcome to Open House one of the leading figures of religion and politics in the US—Jim Wallis. His best-selling book God’s Politics got people of faith thinking seriously again about war, riches and poverty. On Sunday, Jim will walk us through seven 'commitments' that could make the difference to some of the biggest issues of our time.

We’ll review also the latest in film, tackle another everyday dilemma and explore the tricky issue of divorce and remarriage in the church.

Linda:

I was very intereested to hear the Open house quiestion raised tonight re Should big business or the Corporate sector fund Education ( at all levels ? ). Although the results were disapointing with only 2 phonecalls i was still really impressed that the issue was raised. I am studying a very similar subject as part of a GradDip in Adult Education and the Subject is the Global Challenge in Adult Education. The question is raised in the readings i have covered and its obvious that the Labour Markets in Australia have changed drastically over the last 10years meaning that Big Business's have a bigger share of the workforce. But should they fund them. I certainly have a limited view in this subject as i admitted but my opinion up front is that i am suspicious of Corporate Business's funding education if it means they will be able to steer and control too much of the Education market. My opinion is that the Corporate sector is a VERY powerful sector amongst consumers and when in collaboration with governments even and i wonder how much more power the government would allow them to have in our society in steering and shaping the way we learn. Are the underlying values of Corporate business going to clash with the values of the Education and Training sector ?
I would love to hear more comments please.....
