According to the Australian Primary Principals Association, primary school curriculums are becoming too cluttered, and many schools and teachers are suffering from a lack of clarity about what should be taught.
What do you think are the most important subjects for children to learn in primary school? The main subjects like english, maths, science and history, as the APPA thinks?
What about subjects like road safety, financial literacy, sun care, dog safety, bike safety and manners? Should they be part of the curriculum? There’s the argument that children should learn those kinds of skills from their families. But what if they’re not? Shouldn’t they have the opportunity to learn them at school?
What are the essential skills/knowledge that children should leave primary school with?

The most important subject at school is reading because much of our understanding is shaped by what we read. For example many people take what the media portray as actual reality when if fact it is merely an opinion. However if we don't understand this we can become influenced by the media without noticing it. Education is the same. We really need to understand what the final reality of many of the core subjects taught through education everywhere. The sciences for example offer our children an alternate realtiy to that proposed by the Bible. Even english and mathematics when extended also support the empiricist position on origins. Whilst the sciences are important we must remember that like the Bible, they claim to answer the same questions, only better than the Bible. If you visit any University you wuill find that this final reality has such a strangle hold and to think contrary often means one is out of touch with their postmodern post-Christian world. I say reading is crucial and the other subjects that communicate a different final reality to that taught in the Bible should be seen in this light and not ignored. Knowing our Christian position is one thing, communicating it to our postmodern post-Christian contemporaries is another story, but an easy to solve story.
